You can mash 'em, the light ones either have massive range or a goddamn vacuum effect or both, and some of the medium ones (like Hit's medium autocombo) do a **** ton of damage. It's one of many things that really kill the game for me. As simple as the move execution is, there's little point to it when you can just crush your skull against the controller to get the same if not better results. No practice mode needed not that you need it in a game where everyone uses the same basic **** For On top of that, the light attacks got **** range. It doesn't help that defense options are nonexistent. The only thing you got is either down heavy, blowback via Sparking Blast (that's usually one time use in a match unless Shenron exists), or this gay li'l swipe that doesn't even stop your opponent's attack spree, so it'll often just work to their advantage anyway. Who the hell thought a lack of defense was good? Usin' it for ki blasts is mostly pointless when you can just Super Dash through 'em. Sparking Blast is broken as all hell too, makin' everyone stun your block absolutely for free as if defense wasn't already wack.As for the other **** the story mode is lame, the combo challenge ain't even a goddamn combo challenge. Goin' against CPUs is hella inconsistent as they could either perfectly combo into all kinds o' **** or run right into level 3 supers. Online is a hell no without a near perfect connection. Some characters could've had different costumes kinda like Videl with her ****ty long hair.And now, after all the updates, this masher of a game will quickly die off like Smash Bros. The only thing that'll remain of its name. I guess no one makes fighting games anymore, only Nintendo system. This game should've been a 1-on-1 type o' game. The characters would be a lot more unique compared to the half-assed potential of what's in this game. **** the developers who made this anal prolapse called a game. Time to move on from this boring-ass tragedy.

However, my experience with this game left me sorely disappointed, and was utterly bored after about 2 hours of gameplay.The one thing ARC System Works gets right here is the phenomenal attention to detail paid to iconic moments from the Dragon Ball Z anime. Clearly, at least some of the staff who worked on this game are big fans, as every character has some sort of finishing move that is a lovingly crafted reproduction of a clip from the show. Some might fault the game for ripping off the show, but I saw this as an homage to the legacy of the series.Where this game falters is in the fact that it is simply a standard fighting game. Nothing more, nothing less. The mechanics do seem quite engaging, but my ability to grasp them was nil (and perhaps that is more about my lack of patience than any fault of the game's). More off-putting, however, were the rather lengthy load times and a complete lack of deviance from the standard style of your average fighting game. The arcade mode is simply a series of fights, and the game has so little to offer as a single-player exprience.Overall, I felt that there have been other DBZ games in the past that have been more interesting and engaging than this one was. While most can be performed with relative ease there is a high level of skill in using specials and combos effectively and in exciting ways. I think almost anyone can pick up this game and have a good time playing it but there is a huge range of skill and many different aspects of the game to master for more serious players. Even after months of play I was discovering new things about the game and I know I am far from the peak of skill. Each character has enough different abilities that I felt there was a lot of incentive to try all of them and almost every character was fun to play as and could be effectively with enough practice. For example, I found Captain Ginyu was one of the weaker characters but using his body swap technique was just so much fun that it was often worth the risk to try playing as him.One complaint I have is that there aren't enough options to allow lower skill players to battle higher skill ones. I started off playing this game with many friends and coworkers but as I got better I found progressively fewer people wanted to play with me because the game became too one sided. Playing against people at a higher skill level than you is basically a massacre with no gameplay options for evening the playing field. This is a common problem with fighting games but other games, such as Super Smashbros., offer several options for evening the playing field a bit and allowing players of many different levels enjoy the game together. Dragon ball FighterZ is a ton of fun to play when facing opponents of a similar range of skill but I found after playing for a few months only a couple people I knew were willing to play. Online I had to wait long periods of time to find matches and most of the people playing online were of a very high skill level, leading to the opposite problem. Due to the limited number of people playing the Switch version it made that problem particularly bad.Visual Style 9 - The visuals of this game are awesome. It looks almost exactly like the anime. Even when the camera changes angles the character models hold up. The animations of moves are almost exactly the same as they are in the show with many moves capturing iconic moments of the show in almost exact detail. Facial expressions and character intros also capture the essence of each character accurately. The special moves are some of the best looking I have seen in any fighting game they are epic and diverse without taking you out of the experience of the fight. Landing finishing blows is very satisfying and chaining together special combos leads to some awe inspiring moments. My only complaint about the visuals is that some of the backgrounds are inconsistent and don't capture the 2D aesthetic as accurately of the characters characters. The menus and lobbies also look dated compared to the rest of the game.Sound Design 9 - The sound is just as good as the visuals with almost every character's voice captured accurately in English and Japanese so you can choose which you prefer. The voice work is great and the dialogue takes lines from the show while also introducing new lines between characters that you wouldn't expect. Different teams of characters will say different things to each other so there is some incentive to try different combinations just to hear some of the dialogue options. Some of the comments the characters make are really funny and most of them fit the characters well. There are also a ton of music options to choose from. Sound FX in battle are pitch perfect and capture the intensity of the series. The only weakness I would say is that there is no new memorable soundtracks added.Characters 8 - Honestly I wish that there were more characters but what they have is pretty solid and you can get quite a few with the DLC passes (although it costs extra). The number they give you to start with is reasonable though and there are a few unlock-able ones. They did a great job of giving almost every character iconic moves from the show and capturing the look and feel of each. Every character feels true to design.Progression/Campaign 5 - The single player campaign is pretty bad. I give them points for trying to make sense of all these characters of wildly different power levels fighting on equal terms but mostly the campaign is a boring a repetitive slog. The plot is bad even by Dragon Ball Super standards. There are some funny dialog moments throughout the story and they make an honest attempt to keep the characters true to their personalities in the shows but most of the writing is bad fan fiction. On the plus I give them credit for making a lot of cutscenes and 3 different story trees.

The Switch version performs identically to the PS4 and Xbox One versions, running smooth as silk, sharp as ever and with no input lag when playing with Joy-Cons, the Pro Controller, in docked or in handheld mode. Surprisingly, online battles (no Nintendo Online subscription needed) work flawlessly, absent of even a hint of lag or stutter. And even at odd hours (yeah, I was playing at 4am, what of it?), I never had any issue finding an opponent to battle against. Dragon Ball FighterZ is a AAA port of a AAA game, and the Switch version is definitely the one to get.

The Story mode consists of fighting the same 'Clones' which are just Characters from the game with a different color pattern, it's extremely lazy and gets boring QUICK. The story mode is long for a fighting game, but mostly because its filled with cutscenes, some that are interesting and funny, and some that are just boring and pointless, like the same repetitive cut scenes of one of your characters reacting to fighting one of his clones. This is by far one of the worst and most boring story mode in a fighting game i've ever played. The Arcade mode is alright and pretty basic just like any other arcade mode in fighting games. The main problem i have with fighterz though is the just sheer lack of content. The only thing you can do really is play online matches with other people, and even that can be a chore since sometimes the matchmaking is just god awful and the servers will completely just **** itself. The game by no means is easily accesable if you're a casual, they have auto combos in the game which basically means if you spam Light attack or medium attack you'll perform a decently sized combo, but there is no combos list, and if you actually want to get better at the game and actually learn how to play (the in game tutorial doesnt really help at all) you'll have to go out of your way and watch youtube videos, go through many sites and google docs just to find a **** combo list (Since because yaknow, adding a move list with universal combos and character specific combos in the game is just too difficult) and learn Fighting game terms, so you'll have to outsource on that, and that alone scares tons of casuals away, hence why the casuals have already left this game. So at the end of the day, its a empty competitive fighting game that severely lacks content, with the only thing to keep you going being the community and competition.

A brilliant fighting game for newcomers, and a wonderful one for genre fans, that somehow still manages to feel like a disappointment for so comprehensively failing to bring its two demographics together.

It's a dream game for Dragon Ball die-hards, a great new way to test your skills for fighting game nuts and an all-around great experience for everyone else in between. The story and arcade modes present plenty of challenge and things to keep you occupied, and the roster is large enough to make no two battles feel the same. And, refreshingly, the online modes appeal to not just those who have immersed themselves in online battles for years, but newcomers and even just the mildly interested as well. At present time, the PS4 version looks to be the one to get due to a few issues with the Xbox One's online capabilities, but both versions perform even better than you might have hoped. For a game with nearly a full year of hype behind it, Dragon Ball FighterZ delivers in ways that will exceed even the most lofty of expectations. This is a fighting game for the ages.

Even though I’m not the greatest at fighting games (and usually even despise playing them), Dragon Ball FighterZ manages to make the game feel easy to get into, and quickly become rewarding by learning move sets and counter plays.
