The multiple options and variations that DW8 E had in comparison to this reskin is extremely notable. DW9 E's edit mode is purely bare bones with very few options for creating a unique officer. but don't worry; its just an additional $40.00 to download additional costumes/armor which is after a $60 price to pay for it from the start. Actions (weapons/move sets) are interesting, shame there isn't an option to test them out (like in DW8 E) or customize your kingdom or soldiers (Also in DW8 E). I am a huge fan of character creation and loved how it was done in DW8 E, so I had high expectations for this game to blow me away with an actual robust customizing system, but instead they took away more than they added.Speaking of taking things away, this leads to the second reason for the score. NO MULTIPLAYER. Seriously, I did enjoy playing DW 8E solo, but I really enjoyed it when me and my bro can do a double Musou attack on a bunch of fodder. Removing this, made me remove the game. With all of the other known issues (a lot of menus, repetitive gameplay, unnecessary open world) I was willing to tolerate it all, but I couldn't do it without multiplayer.In short this game took DW8 E and put a sticker on it titled "Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires", cut it in half and placed a $40 price tag to actually have any real uniqueness to custom characters, removed multiple options that made the game enjoyable, slightly updated graphics (and yet, not improved), managed to make combat gameplay mechanics even less interesting, and piled on menus for "strategy".Cool idea though, maybe they'll figure it out in DW E10.

But "Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires" doesn't have many new elements to offer. So I like the somewhat more tactical Empires mix of the series, but in principle I could have just put one of the predecessors in the drive. Of course, there are also new action and editing options in the game. From a technical point of view, the title looks rather weak for the new console generation. If you want to play the latest part "Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires" on your console or PC, you'll experience huge Far Eastern mass battles and the technology doesn't quite play along.

I don’t know who Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires is for. The base game has a big fan base and the 1 vs 1000 combat is always fun to wade through. That’s no exception here the combat is still as fun as it ever was but unfortunately, the maps all feel the same and that battlefield rarely changes. I can’t get any joy from the strategy element and for me, it sucks a lot of life out of the game for little reward.

Away from the strategic elements, the game offers the frenetic combat we’ve all come to expect from the Warriors series. Unfortunately, a range of performance issues in the PS4 version and a general lack of variety lessens the impact of otherwise serviceable action. In the end, this is fighting a losing battle.

Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires had everything to correct the main issues from the non-Empires version, however, it has not only failed at that but also managed to come packed with new issues. Whether you are a musou or a Dynasty Warriors fan, there are better options available on the Nintendo Switch.

Summing up Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires is tricky. While the fighting action is as spectacular as it ever was, and still remains fun, the management side of things just seems to slow everything down. It feels like a slog and you’ll want for nothing but the next battle. Basically the battles are good, but the rest of Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires is poor.

Unlike Dynasty Warriors 9 released in 2018, Empires focuses mainly on free play. Battles took the form of conquering enemy fortresses – it’s a breath of fresh air, but the AI copes with this new premise poorly. The graphics are disappointing as well, but despite many flaws the game is highly addictive.

Combine the game itself feeling somewhat undercooked in terms of modes and features and the atrocious technical performance, and you have a rather bitter pill for any Switch-owning Dynasty Warriors fans that choose to swallow it. I won’t say you can’t mine some enjoyment out of this version of the game, but you’re going to have to be more forgiving than you’ve had to be with any prior Warriors game on the platform.

With only siege battles throughout the entire campaign, you’d think that the streamlined combat and barebones graphics would be enough to break the game’s back but they didn’t. Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires manages to cleverly link battles, relationships with other officers and empire-management together into an addictive gameplay loop that works despite all its glaring flaws. The game can be a lot of fun, even if pleasure is as guilty as it's always been with the series.

If Omega Force has done well to drop the open world concept to return to a more classic structure, we note however that little has really changed and it's still boring playing this new game.

I can honestly say that I enjoy Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires more than Dynasty Warriors 9. You may attribute this to the sorry state of the latter when it first launched. Although, I must affirm that I am a big fan of the simulation genre and empire management. The fact that battles affect the grand campaign, and vice versa, makes all the interactions in this installment meaningful. To what extent is up to you. Sadly, apart from a decent graphical upgrade, there’s not enough here to call it a fully realized sequel. The franchise is competing against itself. Unless the updated hack-and-slash gameplay and expanded character roster are enough to tie you over, consider this empire incomplete.

My biggest gripe is the lack of CAW outfits and the over abundant CAW dlc outfits up to 250$ same outfit dlc every installment why cant the older game dlc just be free and they create new outfits... this is a 20$ game not 60$. Koei has become lazy..

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires is a title that, if taken in small doses, is absolutely capable of pampering and entertaining the admirers of the saga and of the strategic drift undertaken by the Empires vein. However, its combat system is still too immature and repetitive, especially when compared to the achievements of the licensed musou that Omega Force and Koei Tecmo Games have given us in recent years. Thanks to the dated technical sector and the questionable recycling of equally obsolete assets, we find no reason that can justify the publisher's decision to offer it at full price.

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires can't make up for the shortcomings baked into the Dynasty Warriors 9 framework. Maybe Dynasty Warriors has just gone on too long; there are only so many ways to tell the same tale and upgrade the basic gameplay. Dynasty Warriors 8 understands the process, but that game came out eight years ago. Time marches on while it seems Dynasty Warriors marches backward.

Whilst this Empires title deviates slightly from the standard Dynasty Warriors formula, it is still fun if you’re looking for a hack and slash game with a bit more strategy. There are issues that plague the game, especially with the use of an open world that lacks reasons to explore and the absence of same-sex marriage. Although with that said, Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires still can be interesting during the siege battles and the beautiful character customisation. At least it’s relaxing to tear a new one into the cannon fodder.

Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires is a poor Switch port of a disappointing entry in the long-running spin-off series. This is a hugely downgraded version of the game, with seriously dialled-back visuals failing to put a stop to consistent frame rate issues during the heat of battle. With a lack of gameplay modes, zero multiplayer options, terrible AI and cosmetic customisation options gone AWOL at launch — Koei Tecmo choosing instead to go the DLC route — this is a truly lacklustre package, a bargain bin affair with a premium price tag, and a Dynasty Warriors game you can feel quite comfortable skipping entirely.

Slightly more cerebral while also filled with the fast action that the series is known for, Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires sits neatly as a midway point between the action of the "proper" Dynasty Warriors and the strategy of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series. There probably isn't all that much of an audience for this, but for fans that were disappointed with the open world experiment of Dynasty Warriors 9, Empires here will be redemption, and for those who have never let their enthusiasm for the series be dampened, this is an excellent opportunity to marry Sun Shangxiang and make many beautiful babies... or perhaps to unite China. Whatever your preference is, really.

Omega Force manages to combine the musou style of Dynasty Warriors with elements of tactical action and turn-based strategy in a very entertaining title, although somewhat repetitive.

If you can laser focus on the strategy elements, and maybe favor diplomacy over direct conflict, there is a playable though still rough experience here. But if you’re looking for satisfying Warriors combat, there are plenty of better options already on Switch.

The return to smaller battlefields away from the open-world approach is a step in the right direction, but every battle feels formulaic. Even with the individual differences in objective and battlefield events the exact same formula can be applied in each battle which can get too repetitive. But in spite of these criticisms, Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires still delivers the type of experience fans have come to expect, and while it doesn’t do much to to distinguish itself from the previous entries, it can still be a lot of fun for those who still enjoy the one-versus-a-thousand style game.

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires gives the player a wide and deeper range of possibilities than its predecessors to lead a successful campaign conquering third-century China. However, despite its deeper management and its simple (indeed solid) one-versus-thousands formula, it fails to completely develop its growth from the past, also struggling with a graphic engine still overwhelmed with fatigue and technical issues. Give it a try (even with the demo) and then decide.
