Element Space is a fusion of two good ideas, utterly debilitated by poor pacing, an awful interface, game-breaking bugs, a brutal difficulty level, and mystifying metagame. Avoid it at all costs.

Element Space had choices that impacted the game like Mass Effect which I liked. Unfortunately, there were many bugs that caused the game time to be funny, frustrating, and annoying. A good game is there somewhere but the problems need to be fixed.

Element Space on Xbox One is a game that apes two of the giants of sci-fi gaming – X-COM and Mass Effect – and instead of using this as inspiration and building on them, instead tries to ride two horses and ultimately ends up falling down the gap in the middle.

Though the combat holds up, it’s just too difficult to find a way to recommend Element: Space as a whole. There’s not much of interest from a narrative standpoint, while all of the good points about the gameplay are offset by the technical problems. It’s a shame, as there’s a good base underneath it, but even with giving leeway based on the small size of the development team, the annoyances currently outweigh the good.

While there is an interesting premise to Element Space the game-breaking bugs and clunky design choices make it a mission just to survive the game, let alone enjoy it.

When Element Space is bad, it’s bad to the point of having to fully close the game and lose anything from a few minutes to a few hours of progress. When it seems good, I began to wonder if it only felt that way because almost every other part of the port feels unfinished. Overall, I appreciate parts and pieces of Element Space, but it cannot hold its own within the genre. Element Space has potential, but potential often isn’t enough.

It feels like the individual parts of Element Space tear the whole to shreds, things that a simple patch might not be able to fix on its own. The combat could be excellent if it were genuinely readable and the narrative would be decent if you could consume it at your own speed. With so many top-shelf tactics games available to play, it would be impossible to recommend this one as-is.

There are some really cool ideas here, and potentially a really good game hidden under a mess that seems like it needed several more months of playtesting and hammering things out. There are just too many things like a lack of polish, a mess of a UI, the camera is hard to control, and bugs/glitches make the experience frustrating. It is sad because, while there are some cool things in here, it simply is not ready for release at this point. It needed way more time actually making sure the core experience is enjoyable, rather than fighting through nearly everything except for enemies.

Element: Space offers up challenging turn based gameplay that will force you to use your wits and every bit of strategy you can muster. You play as Captain Pietham, shortly before his ship is to be retired from the fleet and to be used to house summit talks it is invaded by a mysterious advanced group who then frame Captain Pietham, as you go on the run to uncover the truth and clear your name all before the summit begins you will engage in combat in enemies, while this is fun for a while it does get repeatative rather quickly and any mistakes or bad moves are punished quite harshly, without a checkpoint prior to each fight you may need to reload and replay a battle or 2 to get back to where you was. Unfortunately, I felt the dialog between your allies didn't feel convincing and bland and while some character development was there it felt rushed and as such I never really felt that invested in my characters other than who is better in what situations. While this game does have tedious gameplay at times it does have several redeeming qualities that saves it from being a flop. The game does provide simple controls and a nice UI that doesn't take long to get the hang of and it does strike a balance nicely between fuctionality and depth that can often be a falling point for these games that either too simple or too complex. However general movement outside if combat can sometimes be a touch buggy and require a bit of spamming to move over a bridge etc.Visually Element: Space is where it does win you back, boasting detailed enviroments and nice cover damage animations, along with good character designs and great kill cam animations, I think plenty of effort and time was put into getting the visuals just right. Overall: It's no XCOM, however, Element: Space does provide a interesting story and will provide plenty of hours of gameplay for somebody who enjoys this style of game. I would suggest if new to the genre try elsewhere, should you be a vet of the genre pick it up to add to the collection, it does have some redeeming qualities that warrant adding it to the collection.

If you miss the days of old school BioWare (back when BioWare were still good) then Element Space may be operating on the exact retro wavelength for you.

Element Space is a very difficult game with good intentions but poor delivery. So much time was spent crafting out a storyline, using voice acting and putting some innovations into this genre that the main functionality of the game slips down. With clunky controls, high difficulty and such slow pacing, only experts at the turn-based strategy will make it through to enjoy the storyline. But they would need to be a glutton for punishment and have a lot of time on their hands.
