It's a novel idea that sets Outlast apart from the pack, and will carry you through this twisted ride until the credits roll.Definitely not for the faint of heart. You'll witness some truly horrific acts. The disturbing moments, extreme violence, and creepy atmosphere make for a truly unsettling horror experience that will stick with you long after you've completed it. The chase sequences will get your blood pumping and pulse racing as you desperately try to lose your pursuers. The story at the core of things is decent, but it's the side-stories found in case files scattered around the asylum and the personal notes one will get from recording and documenting certain events that really get under your skin. Especially since the final act takes a turn for the less-frightening as you move away from the dark hallways of the asylum in favor of the brighter-lit underground laboratory locations. Admittedly, I appreciated the moment to catch my breath after being constantly on the edge up until that point, and it does seem like the next most reasonable place for the narrative to go. Still, the game ends on a slightly flatter note as a result.Your gameplay experience with Outlast will be plagued with dread to the point where it may even be hard to keep going at times due to apprehension about what may be around the next corner. As terrifyingly exhilarating it is to narrowly escape with your life when running from one of the asylum's deformed denizens, these moments can also be pretty frustrating. The game's tendency to every now and then force you into a more contained section of the asylum where an enemy or two relentlessly patrols the area while you must do things like reach pumps to drain the path forward in order to progress gets old fast. They are scary at first, but can quickly become tedious in the face of several repeated attempts. Something that can drain the fear from Outlast and make players want to move on for entirely different reasona.The complaints I have didn't do much to lessen my enjoyment of the game though. Especially since it's a pretty brief experience. The originality is what will win you over and ultimately scare the pants off of you. There's nothing quite like stealthily making your way through pitch black corridors with only your camera's night-vision mode to guide you and an ever-rapidly draining battery. It's like the first ever found-footage style video game and it's a blast to play.

There is a certain lack of content, as the game is pretty short and you can find all the collectibles pretty fast on your first playthrough.

Let it be known that Outlast is a genuinely stressful and nerve-racking experience, but that’s exactly what a true survival horror game should be, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

But the dark aura, great use of night vision and limited battery usage kept you constantly on edge. Plus with no weapon to defend yourself, you truly felt vulnerable and scared at what could lurk around the corner or even behind you. A great effort by the guys at Red Barrels.

A chilling and well-realised experience, Outlast accomplishes almost everything it sets out to do. A strong start for the team and a strong entry in this resurgent genre.

It's not the sort of horror that'll stay with you long beyond the credits, not a quiet and subtle creep fest, but a blunt force shocker. And as such it's effective because it's just so damn drastic.

It's pure horror, as if you were in an IMAX cinema. It will surround you, and terrify you, especially in the very well crafted first hours. Then it gets a bit repetitive, but it's still an adventure you won't easily forget.

For the most part, Outlast lives up to its reputation. Although a little too quick to link gore with horror for my liking, it rests upon wide foundations of creepiness and builds on them with a good amount of tension and urgency.

We would have asked Red Barrels for a little innovation instead of sticking to the new hide & run mechanics, but still, Outlast is an outstanding survival horror that will terrify pretty much everyone.

Jump scares may have your heart racing for a few seconds, however, creeping across that darkened courtyard with your batteries running out while something out there wants you tortured and dead will have you on edge until the experience ends.

If you already own the PC version, there is absolutely zero reason to purchase this again. On the other hand, Sony is releasing it for free for PS members right off the bat, which is a tough price to argue down.

As a budget Steam release, Outlast offers some cheap thrills for fans of the survival horror genre. Unfortunately its underwhelming visuals, combined with Red Barrel Games’ over-reliance on jump-scares ahead of more psychological frights, made my experience with it feel similar to walking through a haunted house: It’s scary, but not in a very clever way.

A little but perfectly accessible, even greatly playable game. It puts forward its hero protagonist and his helplessness, its whimsical hazard, and its great number of properly placed scripts. While playing Outlast you will relive plenty of convulsive experiences, but you will chuckle at the very same time. Gameplay aside, if the game was a bit more creative, it could get a better grade.

It’s certain not to appeal to all gamers, and while I often personally use games to relax and blow off steam, I find that after playing an hour or so of Outlast I’m too wound up to play anymore. Good thing then that the whole game is about five hours long.

I was also happy that there wasn't an overuse of jump-scares. I loved using the camera to explore, I thought that this was a great (but over used) mechanic.The cons are: A loss of immersion after the first 1/2 an hour of play. I played in the dark with headphones and set my gamma low enough to ensure stuff would be getting the jump on me. But even with this the unoriginal story, the amount of time spend so close to the enemies (they lose their scariness), and overuse of the night-vision on the video camera killed the immersion for me. I feel that if the player only got glimpses of the enemies and used the night-vision 20% of the time (rather than 90%) would have made this a perfect game.Regardless of the fact that I just used more characters to type about the game's flaws it is easily one of the best horror games I've played and I whole heartily recommend it.

The initial hours, when played with a survivor’s unsure intent are electrifying, illuminating a slice of fast, animal terror. Before long, it settles into the mechanical, methodical, human realm, challenged by a few creative late-game curves. By all means check in, get a physical, but you might want to opt for outpatient care.

Red Barrels have done a fantastic job combining an intensely disquieting setting, a unique visual look, and an incredibly effective camera gimmick to ensure that nobody escapes Mount Massive without a few nightmares.
