Steel Rats is a game that should cater for the adrenaline junkies and action hero wannabes, but instead the convoluted controls and questionable handling slams the brakes on hard ensuring a much slower pace than expected if you wish to gain any fun from it.

It’s frustrating that a game that oozes style from nearly every facet can need a mechanical tune up so badly. With more fine tuned controls, and more meat on its bones, this could’ve been an absolute home run for the developer. Instead, despite all of its charm, Steel Rats simply fails to really hold the players attention for its entire journey and it’s a real shame.

Steel Rats races into near perfection, with only a few downsides to controls and aiming. It’s easily one of my favorite new titles released this year.

Steels Rats is the definition of a ‘meh’ game. It has some nice ideas and elements, but nothing is really pulled off particularly well. Combat is fine, if repetitive, but the awkward camera view, the unreliable collision detection, and the general lack of any real character, collectively brings the whole thing down.

Something a little different then the usual. It's like "Trials" meets "Inside" A platformer on bikes where you solve puzzlers, fight robots, while making crazy jumps and riding on walls. You fight tons of different type drones, and bosses while looking for secrets and collecting junk you can use to upgrade your characters. There are different characters to find, and they all have different skills and attacks. I loved the voice acting for all of them. Really good voice acting for a small Indie like this. Everything about it seems high quality for a small Marketplace title like this, The cut scenes are beautiful, the level design really high quality. So many positives I can say about this game. It really feels special, the only thing is the controls kind of ruin that, If the controls were more spot on, this game could have grabbed a 8.5 or maybe even a 9. The controls how ever are very frustrating. The game is challenging so when the bike does what it wants to some times it can ruin your game, and make you have to start the levels over. If you hang in there, and grind past these issues it is really worth it. In theory the concept of Metroidvania platforming with bikes and elements of Trials still is promising. But technical shortcomings hold the One-version back.

Steel Rats is a game that is very interesting to say the least because it takes the Trials formula approach and includes platforming mixed in with a "beat-’em-up" combat system and overall it works well. It isn’t a perfect experience and it takes a bit of getting squinted with, but once you familiarize yourself you’ll see a game that provides a unique experience. Steel Rats is all about getting from point to point and while this may seem simple to you after taking on a few levels you’ll find out that it isn’t as simple as it first appears. You'll be taking on multiple enemies and this is where the game definitely shines its brightest, due to the unique combat which packs many satisfying moments. Completing each level in the game is great fun because the creativity is intuitive and when you combine that with the unlock-able upgrades, it will no doubt keep your attention. There are times where it may feel slightly repetitive and there are a few technical issues on occasion. Despite that Steel Rats does more than enough to satisfy your gaming hunger.

Steel Rats is built around a fun, refreshing concept, offers more than meets the eye and is varied enough to keep boredom at bay for the whole duration of the game, but could use better visuals and audio, and more creativity when it comes to enemies’ design.

Steel Rats comes like a breath of fresh air in the platformer genre thanks to the vehicle combat elements mixed in, which boost the game's intensity to a level any hardcore gamer dreams of. While you may start off cursing at how you control your bike, a few hours into the game you'll be going faster and faster, chopping through bots, dodging falling debris and speed running through levels like you've been born doing it.

We really wanted to enjoy Steel Rats (and there were moments when it showed its true potential), but ultimately it’s marred by derivative combat and the occasional erratic behaviour of the bike, especially in jumping sequences, leading to some unfair deaths.

Even if it enjoys a nice art direction, cool audio and nice level-design, Steel Rats hardly deploys its full potential, mostly because of a poorly calibrated gameplay.

Steel Rats, with its demanding combat and big-budget action, pretty much builds a whole new genre around itself. I’ve seen stunt racing and vehicular combat before, but the developers have blended the two so exquisitely that the it defies comparison to anything else. Naturally, Steel Rats ends with an obvious sequel hook, so I’ll end this review with a ‘More, please.’

Steel Rats ultimately ends up being a good platforming game idea marred by unfortunate controls and physics, Combine that with a storyline that seems to be trying too hard to be taken seriously and you're left with almost no driving reason to play other than stubbornness, which does not really equate to fun.

When Steel Rats works, it works really well. Levels where you’re gunning it through well-charted courses, flipping and spinning through the air, burning through obstacles like a hot knife through butter—these are an absolute joy to play. Somewhere in Steel Rats is a game I would gladly play and recommend. Unfortunately, the pieces just didn’t fall into place often enough for me to call the full game good. The game overall is a very stylistic “okay.”
