I’ve not played the original game and bought this on a whim after reading that it was relaxing to play. Can certainly confirm that it is a pretty immersive experience with some challenging aspects that to me as a train novice are just right. The trains feel very different to drive and it’s a great feeling when you start building up a bit of speed on a line or get into a rhythm of timing passenger stops. I started on the London Underground which features the Bakerloo line. The loco is simple to operate and initially it was quite repetitive until you get out into the longer runs through Wembley. I then moved onto freight operations in Pennsylvania, but found the action a bit fiddly and will come back to it later - I appreciate the variety though. Then I tried the modern high speed trains operating in western Germany and really enjoyed getting up big speed while also dealing with the various speed limit and gradient changes that you have to factor in. At its best you really believe you are there and the experience is almost zen like it really is true. At its worst you can be hunting around the cabin for the correct process for allowing the train to operate after stopping unexpectedly for quite a while! But I will say the tutorials and driver aids do a good job of preparing you. Overall a really nicely done simulation with loads to do and a variety. Add in the huge amount of trophies and DLC options, then this will keep you occupied for a long time. I can quite happily spend 2 hours playing before realising what the time is and that has to be the sign of a good game/simulation.

Dovetail Games provides an accurate train simulator. It’s unforgiving, brutal at times, but oddly relaxing and fun when things start running smoothly. It is truly a train simulator.

Game becomes even better if you disable whatever possible to support you in the play. (looking at speed limits, red & green lights) to apply the right speed or to stop the train is a great thing. It is highly possible that I'll purchase more trains and routes within the game. It is important to note, that this game is not for everybody, if you are looking dynamic, action based simulation game with a lot of additional adventures this is possibly not for you.Apart from the above I like the game graphics, physics and overall experience. It never crashed on my PC and I’ve played it so far about 20 hours already.

A very difficult game to review. On the one hand, it seems to be a very very detailed sim (although not being a train driver, how would IA very difficult game to review. There are lovely touches like rain on the windscreen of the ICE3M and the environments you drive through are reasonably realistic looking (although the inside of a tube tunnel can't have taxed the developers much).The audio is spot on - very authentic. I have no complaints there.But unfortunately there are a few things that detract from the obvious care and attention that went into this game.First, the graphics, while very beautiful, have very visible level of detail pop-in, and shadows that draw in about 10 yards in front of the train. This is on PS4 Pro (with an SSD drive) and switching from 4K to HD has no effect except to change the resolution. There's no HDR colour support either. And yet, when driving the ICE3M through heavy rain, the rain effects looked (and sounded) amazing, and that the rain stopped momentarily whenever you went under bridges was a nice touch.Secondly, the tutorials are terribly obtuse. They walk you through the sequence required to get a train moving, but also leave a lot out so you can have followed all the steps but your train simply won't move. In many cases where this happened to me, it seems to be because I'd applied the power too quickly. At this point, the tutorial abandons you until you work out what's wrong or quit and start again from scratch.The tutorial VoiceOver will ask you to "take a quick glance at the platform to ensure all is safe", but won't explain how to do that without leaving your seat (how do drivers do this in real life?). In one tutorial where I was supposed to change to the cab at the other end of the train, the prompt says "Press the triangle button to sit in any available seat"... when the only seat I should sit in is the driver's seat!It's this lack of polish that frequently makes the game far too frustrating.The joypad controls are also rather awkward. In the German trains the power control is on the left but mapped to R1 and R2... and the brake is on the right and mapped to L1 and L2. This takes some getting used to. You can opt to point at the thing you want to move and press or hold 'X', but good luck with that. Sometimes you'll hold on a lever and get the symbol indicating where to move it, yet the thumbsticks do nothing. Release and grab on a second time and suddenly it works. On the Underground train, the Dead Man's handle seems to release far too easily while you're changing power/brake, and the initial unlock switch can't even be seen when sitting in the drivers seat (as it's right behind), so turning the key once it's in is a matter of moving the pointer around blindly until you see the right label. Ok, so it might be like that in the real thing, but at some point you do have to make a concession to this being a video game.Overall then, I'm having fun with this because I got it at a severe discount. If you're an absolute train fanatic, maybe you won't mind the below-par graphics. Otherwise, steer clear and see if they make a better version for PS5.

I thought the newer version has to be much better smoother and decided to buy the new one. Now I’m a bit disappointed...Frame drops and hiccups are everywhere on Xbox Series X. The game is absolutely not optimized and looks good only on YouTube videos on small screens. I wonder if they pull an optimization patch for XSX?There are tons of bugs, glitches and the most annoying is that you cannot continue saved game in some cases : simply the train won’t drive if you saved the game during passengers entering.Despite of it I love the concept and spend hours enjoying the game as I didn’t find and substitute for such a game.

Anyone who has played Dovetail Games’ series train simulators will know that they are surprisingly accessible even to just the casual fan, as well as providing countless hours of fun for simulator enthusiasts. Since its release not long, Train Sim World has grown and evolved with various DLC releases, allowing you to experience driving various trains through four different countries. TSW2 now builds upon that, providing an updated platform that features improvements to both the graphics and the physics, while laying the foundations for steam engines and multiplayer to be added in future. The two new routes include Köln–Aachen in Germany (featuring both the high speed ICE 3M and regional Talent 2 train), and the London Underground’s Bakerloo Line. Sand Patch Grade, which was the first route in TSW, also makes a return with a bit of a sprucing up. Each of the routes are highly detailed and, speaking as a Londoner, I can vouch that the Bakerloo Line is impressively accurate in its representation. Not only are the stations faithfully replicated (regular commuters will recognize the Sherlock Holmes tiles at Baker Street), but even above ground, I was able to recognize familiar buildings like the Royal Mail Depot near Stonebridge Park. A few things can break the immersion though, such as the presence of passengers still on your train when you enter sidings after finishing the route, and the overall sounds are lacking, both in terms of volume and accuracy. As you’re free to get out of your train and walk around the stations, the first thing you’ll notice is that the platforms are sparsely populated in terms of passengers, although the adverts on the platforms themselves look true to life. Little things like the PA announcements or staff dispatching trains from the platform would make a nice touch if they were added. Exploring the stations by foot also enables you to complete optional objectives, such as placing route maps or refilling first aid kits. The Köln–Aachen route offers a change of scene to the dark tunnels beneath London. Driving the route with the ICE 3M, which can easily reach speeds 250kmph, trees and buildings whip by. It’s here that the external camera comes in handy to admire the views, as well as taking a closer look at the other railway traffic on the route. Outside of the passenger routes, the revamped Sand Patch Grade offers players some freight action. While this was the first route released for PC in TSW, it’s only now that Xbox players are able to experience one of the steepest railroads in America. The new adhesion physics mean you have to keep a close eye on your speed, especially in wet or snowy conditions to avoid excessive wheel-slip. With this route, you have a choice of three locomotives to operate as well as plenty of wagons to shunt around Cumberland Yard. For me, the highlight is still unleashing my inner child and operating the railway turntable! The trains and locomotives themselves have great amounts of detail, with plenty of switches to flick, dials to check, and computer screens to look through. While that might sound overwhelming, the tutorials and scenarios do a good job of teaching you which buttons to press to turn on the train and get yourself moving. From there, it’s pretty easy to control the train’s throttle and brakes, although it’s still down to you to manage your speed and stop in the right place on the platforms. If you want to use the more advanced features of each train, such as the automatic signaling and safety systems, or perhaps some of the cruise control systems, you’ll probably need to refer to the real world manuals found online, as none of the scenarios or tutorials currently take you those features. When you do get going, the overhauled HUD reduces clutter, while still providing you with important information like your train’s speed, the speed limit, as well as the status of the signal ahead. If you want to crank up the realism, you’re free to turn off this information, but you’d better hope your route knowledge is up to scratch! Other than the new routes, TSW2 also adds the Scenario Planner, which gives the ability to create your scenarios with whatever routes, trains and destinations you wish. Unfortunately, you can’t share or use other player’s scenarios, but console support would be a welcome addition in future. An ‘Off The Rails’ mode lets you step outside the realms of what is physically possible, such as running electric trains on a diesel route. This long-awaited feature will increase hopefully with DLC updates.

Once again, train sim fans and those who love the railways will absolutely adore this, and so if you fancy having a go at being a train driver there isn't a better place to achieve your dream than with Train Sim World 2.

Going forward, I'm hoping that Train Sim World 2 can serve as a platform that Dovetail can continue to expand on, not just in terms of routes and trains, but features that fans have been looking forward to for years. If you're new to the series, or train simming in general, this really is the most accessible and best way to start.

Train Sim World 2 comes with a decent helping of long-form missions that offer a good balance of challenge and complexity. It's simple enough for anyone to get into, but engaging enough for a train enthusiast to enjoy. While there are some quirks in the track, this is the most polished railroad simulator I've ever played.

Train Sim World 2 is unquestionably an acquired taste, but even if you’re not a railway enthusiast, there’s a relaxing release here that we recommend. Once you get to grips with how to operate the various locomotives, there’s a tangible satisfaction to kicking back for 60 minutes with the hum of the engine in the background, as you travel cross-country through urban and rural routes. We’ve already lost dozens of hours to this title, and with the base package merely representing the beginning of its journey, we suspect we’ll be spending a lot more time behind the controls of some of the world's most famous trains.
