There are drawbacks but this maybe because of its outdated game design. Overall, the story is great but not for a large game. It may have something to do with the game being made originally more than 20 years ago. its quite linear and there are absolutely no progression system therefore it feels like playing a story telling game.

The graphics are great, but the gameplay seems that it was not updated and stuck a few generations ago.I was excited when I started playing the game an saw the lovely new graphics, but by the time I got to my first gun battle and fist fight, I knew the remaster was a wasted opportunity.The shooting mechanics are just off to me, bad guys fall in a scripted animation and the shooting physics are very weak.+ great storytelling+ great graphics- Not much to do other than the single player story.- weak physics in the game- clipping and behind cover mechanics caused some deaths or game fail conditions- movement of the character is stiff during combat.- The frame rate is very bad, this should have easily reached 60fps without fail in 2020.Avg at best, recommend trying it for the story if you can grab it on sale.

This is a full-fledged, honest to God remake. Some changes to the story will upset hardcore fans, but I think this approach is absolutely justified. Even though this remake is not as amazing as new versions of Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy 7, it’s still a worthy update.

In some cutscenes the characters seem totally out of sync with the voices. The animations are awful very 2002 looking it looks as if they changed only the textures and models. In terms of content you don't get only the original 20 missions with no side activities, it doesn't really feel like an open world game if they hold your hand every step of the way. The shooting and cover mechanics are again very outdated, every gunfight is clunky, the enemy AI is awful and I also experienced critical bugs more than 1 month after release. I tried to reload a checkpoint in mission 4 and I got pushed back 2 checkpoints, and the police was giving me a fine. After that I couldn't move. I had to delete save files manually in order to be able to continue. Some other time in the same mission I had to enter a motel to save a guy. As soon as I was out of stealth I started taking damage over time out of nowhere and I just died. The infamous banana race is still there and it is as bad as it ever was. I did it in the original game but I don't feel like spending one afternoon to keep trying until I get lucky. I don't know why they had to make it just as frustrating again (at least now you have to race only 3 laps and from what I remember in the original game you had to race 6 laps). If Mafia was your favourite game and you can overlook all the bugs and clunky stuff you can buy it but you just make sure you don't expect anything better than the original game (excepting the graphics).

Mafia: Definitive Edition takes an old title and adds polish in the places where it counts most — story and character — while delivering a solid experience in most other aspects. The driving isn’t great and there are a few bugs that need to be squashed, but diving into this wonderfully tragic tale is an offer that no one should refuse.

Revisiting the Story of Tommy, and how he meets Paulie and Sam and ends up a good fella in Don Salieri's Family. I just want to start with, this game is gorgeous! The sound, animation, textures... There was obviously a lot of love and effort poured into this remake. From the ground up everything was redone, with the exception of the core story. The Voice acting is on point, and the writing seals the deal. The entire game was always an homage to the 30's crime noir, and gangster fiction. The game does an incredible job immersing you into Tommy's life durring his run with Don Salieri's Family. The two radio stations help drive the feel of the time, more in the talking and adverts than the music, but I can't deny that the music is also on point! Nothing quite like getting chased and shot at while some good swing music adds to the discord of the situation. I've always been a fan of that eras cars, and they did an incredible job embodying the look and feel of that periods automobiles. I've seen a few remakes over the last few years, but few have made such an impressive change as Hangar 13 and 2k Games pulled off. If you were a fan of any part of the series, this is a MUST HAVE. If you're new to it, there isn't a better time to start the series than now!

Definitive Edition is a great remake. Hangar 13 respects the work of Illusions Softworks and expands it to improve every aspect of the game.

While the characters themselves haven’t aged as well, Mafia: Definitive Edition, though based on a game that’s nearly 20 years old, feels more refreshing than most open-world games.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is tedious enough as it is by 2020 standards. Clunky gunplay and lousy vehicle handling make the shootouts as frustrating as the getaway drive. The promising setup can’t avoid getting whacked either as it disappoints through its inability to meaningfully execute on its multiple beats. The talented cast and better realized 1930s world outdo its 2002 counterpart, but the rest of its blunders come together and result in an offer that’s relatively easy to refuse.

Rather than burn me out, Hanger 13 has done a fantastic job overhauling the original Mafia while staying true to its spirit in this remake which has left me itching to fire up Mafia II Definitive Edition – so do yourself a favour and pick up the trilogy set if you haven’t already.

Dripping with atmosphere, Mafia offers a strong story with engaging characters, great voice-acting and an intriguing setting. The game does fine in the gameplay department as well, but strafing feels a bit clunky and there's quite a bit of screen-tearing to spoil your fun. You'll still have a good time, though.

Mafia has finally regained its splendor and this remake will be a very good entry point for anyone who wants to discover a game that marked its time, with a little indulgence, while fans will appreciate this facelift that never betrays the essence of the original experience, while modernizing it despite its sometimes aging aspects.
