The story and characters are excellent and the game is enjoyable, but the open world detracts from the experience rather than adding to it.

Mafia 3 is a game that gets in its own way. The city is beautiful, the themes are mature and the story, writing and performances are all easily some of the best we’ve had in games this year, but then the incredibly repetitive missions, wonky AI and technical glitches all make getting to the meat a royal pain in the arse. I’ve never loved and hated a game simultaneously quite as much as Mafia 3.

Hangar 13 has done a terrible job on the PC port. But even ignoring all those pesky technical issues, Mafia 3 suffers from lack of variety. The game’s open world is dead and artificial, while the great atmosphere and competent storytelling feel wasted.

Random encounters were well thought out, conversations both on the street and with characters were relevant to my progress within the story. The world was so lovely to be in that I often found myself listening out a top song and simply watching the world go by before entering a mission marker. The gameplay and story were both very good, it all felt crisp and well written, I loved the call out system for guns, cars and bank. The soundtrack is, by far, the best I've ever heard and was worth the price alone, it will never be bettered in a game. The driving took a while to get used to but after a few hours and some upgrades it became a really enjoyable experience with some epic drifts and high speed close shaves, the traffic density is just right, and with that soundtrack I often found myself getting in the zone.A few down sides, a few more side missions and some side activities would be nice. It require's a more detailed combat system, especially melee. Father James is painful to listen too and his character is unconvincing, can - he - talk - any - slower. Lighting is unstable. The game crashed 3 times in roughly 40 hours of play. Frame rate dropped a tiny bit at points towards the end of the game. The solid bushes everywhere felt a little bit quick and cheap, bushes aren't solid objects! Give us the option to create a save point, we should be free to save, load and back up as we please.Despite some lighting issues I think the game has been very well tested which most don't agree with, it was a pleasure to play, a thoroughly enjoyable experience with some innovative touches.

Mafia III does most things right, though. It is an enjoyable game, one that has probably the best licensed soundtracks for a game outside of a music-based game. The combat and cover mechanics work really and the cut-scenes allow the story to progress smoothly in the wonderfully presented city of New Bordeaux.

It’s refreshing to see a game tackle hard issues so earnestly, and I can honestly say this is a story which will stay with me long after playing.

If anything, I think the game is worth checking out for the story alone. It’s unfortunate that the gameplay is so much of a slog that some players may not think the story is worth the trouble. However, if you have the time, the extra coin, and love mob stories, this tale has a satisfying end.

Mafia 3's goals are ambitious and even laudable, but to tell a serious story about race, especially within the form of an open-world action game, requires heavy lifting. For all of the writing's attempts to push the genre forward, its game design is trapped in the open-world conventions of five years ago. That stale foundation isn't strong enough to hold the weight of Mafia 3's words — even if they're words that are worth hearing.

Now I know why 2K decided to hold review copies of Mafia III until launch. The game -- which could've and should've been great, given the quality of those before it -- is a buggy, repetitive and downright boring mess. It saddens me to say it, but it's true.

Mafia's return is a bittersweet one. On one hand, there are several visual issues that burden the game, and the feeling of being an errand boy completing repetitive missions is always there. On the other hand, Hangar 13 ha created a world with its own personality, a really interesting city and the soundtrack selection is superb. The adult, violent and vengeance-themed plot is another remarkable point.

Mafia III is consistently inconsistent. An engrossing and mature narrative told between repetitive and boring missions, satisfying gun play against moronic AI enemies all taking place in a beautifully designed city that’s ruined with shitty lighting effects. Throw in numerous game crashes (on Xbox One) and a ridiculous count of reported bugs on PC you have a game that appears to have been built by talented people but QA checked by the work experience kid.

Mafia III is a missed opportunity to put an important time in American history in the spotlight, and ends up being one of the most lifeless and one-note open-world experiences I’ve come across. You can see the potential for a great game here, but it sticks to safe and simple gameplay and storytelling conventions, and ends up being a bloody bore.

Lincoln is an incredible protagonist and New Bordeaux is a fantastic setting thematically, and it would’ve been great to see them put to better use.

It tells its story well, with smart writing and some superb characterisation that elevate its simple revenge plot. Ultimately, however, it never capitalises on its open world potential, instead succumbing to an almost constant lull of tediously unimaginative repetition that makes for a boring and dated open-world shooter.

If you approach Mafia III as an interactive journey, then you probably won’t have any issue with it overall. If you’re looking for a fully fleshed out title akin to GTA, then Mafia III could come off as a shallow release...I’m somewhere in the middle, but leaning more toward the former. The story and visuals are easily the strength of the game, and the gameplay isn’t flawed or repetitive enough to kill the vibe.

It does come with a few bugs, but in my first 6 hours of playing I only experienced one instance of the game crashing. I haven't experienced any major annoying bug otherwise. The storytelling is stellar and gives the missions a purpose, something that I felt was missing in GTA5. Gameplay is fun too. If you like open world games and are willing to go through many cut scenes that tell you a very well scripted story, you will love this game.

The game cues are written so small that you have to guess at which button they want you to push. The overall look of the game is muddy and grainy. The story and acting so far are excellent but that does not excuse the release of a game with so many bugs and issues. Also it looks like they used the same map as Mafia 2 and just added some marshy background. The area where you meet one character is exactly the same as Mafia 2. I like the music but probably that is because I remember this music so some younger players may not feel this way. Overall another sad and indefensible release of an unfinished game.

Mafia III lacks seriousness to become a boss in the open-world action game genre. It sure has a very interesting setting and its scenario is efficient, thanks to some amazing cut scenes. But it just doesn't feel like it's a finished game in terms of visuals, and its mechanics tend to be just too repetitive. Too bad.

But the things that you do in between are repetitive and get samey after few hours, the mechanics are all good, driving feels right, shooting and cover are implemented right (bar some issues i had switching over underfire) collectibles are pretty fun and interesting as well.But it can become boring after the 10th time going into the same bar or factory and either killing a guy or blowing up some property. then driving to point A and repeating again. just started to lose me around 4-5 hours in.Very much like a Ubisoft style of open world, just icons everywhere full of repetitive missions and nothing unique like in a Rockstar game.
