Neversong is a dark and thrilling tale with a child-like twist, exploring human emotion in a world without adults. The dark storyline contrasts starkly to the beautiful score and artwork, the clear influences from Tim Burton and The Legend of Zelda creating an immediate connection and sense of nostalgia.

Neversong is a delightful experience from top to bottom, but it just gets in its own way too many times. From frustrating level design to some hit detection issues in combat, there’s just enough of a lack of polish to be noticeable, but the incredible aesthetic, thought-provoking story and top-notch blend of puzzles and platforming create an experience I would definitely recommend for fans of the genre. It just isn’t necessarily one you need to jump off the couch to pick up.

This delightful, and simultaneously disquieting work features elementsthat will appeal to everyone, whether they are seeking a morestory-driven game or a more action and puzzle-based experience. With itsstunning audiovisual enviroment and a lifespan that may be rather shortbut full of reasons to come back to, Neversong is without any doubt anew and a very welcome gem in the Nintendo Switch catalogue.

The enemies you face are never particularly difficult to beat, but controlling Peet is surprisingly twitchy at times, and you’ll often run into a creature by accident, immediately taking away one of your hearts. Additionally, we simply wish the game was a bit longer. The content that’s here really is a joy to experience, and we’re of course conscious that artificially lengthening the game would no doubt diminish its value, but we can’t deny a certain level of disappointment after completing it in just a few short hours.

Neversong is a highly effective release in so many ways. The standout framework and subsequent story building leave room for interpretation, and the apt aesthetics go well beyond mere window dressing. You don’t see one-man studio releases of this high quality very often. Nearly everything falls into place in the best way imaginable.

Despite giving the sense of some underdeveloped gameplay mechanics, Neversong manages to tell a dark tale about child trauma in a poetic, nightmarish narrative, using odd characters, exceptional art and strong symbolism.

Neversong is nearly the perfect game for the genre. Aside from the few issues that I mentioned, and few they are, it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with side-scrolling puzzle game mechanics. The story is dark, beautiful, and haunting in a way that only a few games have been able to capture before. If you’re thinking of the next title to pick up and scratch that psychological narrative itch, Neversong is the clear choice.

Neversong might not be the greatest platformer as such, but it’s its story and narrative how it connects with the player. If you want a deeper take on the genre, this might be your game.

The graphics are stylized like a simple 2D with a childish look. The fighting is ok. The control can be frustrating, especially with those swinging objects. Otherwise, it's very tight with a controller. The sounds are pretty interesting and the music is decent. I give it 82%. This is not a children game but if you like a twisted and serious story, with some intriguing puzzles, it's for you. The game takes 4-5 hours to complete.

For me, the story and theming of Neversong embody a two-thousand-year-old statement of wisdom for us all: You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
