Unruly Heroes features a mix of platforming and combat with four characters that you can switch between on the fly. With a handful of interesting bosses and plenty of mechanical variation between levels, the game never locks you into one style of play for too long. Ultimately, though, I didn’t find any part of it that much fun to play, which wasn’t helped by its leaden controls and uneven difficulty.

I finished it solo and it never felt unfair. If something hard you try it a couple of times to pass it. This game is a gem and one of the best platform games we got in years. Overall, Unruly Heroes is a blast to play! I enjoyed learning each characters' abilities despite tending to stick to one play style in games that let me switch. Being able to switch characters on the fly is the perfect way to coax players like myself into experiencing fully what Unruly Heroes has to offer, and I'm glad that I did. The game always surprises and makes exploring super enjoyable, but with a bit of a stronger story element I think it would have been tied together just a little better.

Made by ex Rayman developer, Unruly Heroes is an excellent action/platform inspired by a classic novel like Journey to the West. A game that has been overlooked by many but that you definitely need to check out.

A nice mix of platforming and beat-em up, with an awesome art style and good puzzles, but with a bit too repetitive combat system.

Unruly Heroes is a really good 2D platformer with gorgeous animations, backgrounds, and a hand-drawn art style which is nothing but stunning. The enemies and bosses stand-out, and the combat feels good. The story however is seemingly nowhere to be found, and that is despite some cleverly written and humorous dialogue, while the gameplay can become repetitive and a bit stale over time.

Unruly Heroes fits well in the new wave of artistic 2D platform games led by Rayman and shines among them with a peculiar charme. It structure isn't quite well developed as its graphics, but it is undoubtedly a pleasure to play and watch.

This is a fantastic adventure full of platforming, puzzles and combat, with tons of good ideas and creativity. On top of that, we can have even more fun playing it with friends.

I don't know if perfection is a rational goal, but I can say that Unruly Heroes has come as close to platforming perfection as any game should be expected to and it'd be a mistake to miss it.

Its beautiful visuals and flourishes of gameplay ingenuity are hampered by bugs, combat that doesn’t excite, and what often feels like an unfair level of difficulty.

Unruly Heroes is an exciting twist on the age-old tale of Journey to the West and, while it's not the first video game or even piece of pop culture inspired by the novel, it's perhaps one of the most fun and quirky versions of the story in a long time.

Unruly Heroes closely follows the trail left by the latest Rayman, creating a very original action platformer, which is characterized above all by keeping its mechanics fresh along all levels, with a very eye-catching visual design and care. Perfect for four players in local, but also for a single player experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed the combat elements in the game because there is a decent variety of moves to do and each move feels very satisfying. While the puzzles that you come across in the game don’t have much in terms of depth I actually found them to be enjoyable and in a way they kept things fresh. The platforming elements have been done well and I especially enjoyed these elements when taking on the fantastic bosses. While there may be a few difficult moments along the way I didn’t feel overwhelmed at any point and for me more of a challenge would’ve been nice. There isn’t much variety present in the enemies you have to face along the way and only the bosses really stand out. I found the switching mechanic to be very basic and I didn’t think it brought much to the table, but was a novel concept. When I think about the platforming genre I get a very warm feeling because the amount of classics I’ve played during the years makes this genre without a doubt one of my favorite genre’s. As you can imagine then I’m always looking forward to a new platforming adventure and whilst Unruly Heroes isn’t the best experience I’ve ever had before it still is a very enjoyable game. From the moment I started Unruly Heroes I was captivated immediately by the presentation side of things and to say the art style is gorgeous would be a massive understatement. Obviously though the presentation isn’t the most important aspect in a platforming game because that of course is reserved for the platforming elements themselves and thankfully I’m pleased to say that they’ve been done well. I do however have a small gripe though and that is that I would’ve liked to have been challenged a little more along the way. More varied enemies would’ve been nice as well because even though the bosses and combat are spot on facing the other enemies does make things become a little tedious every now and then. Despite this though Unruly Heroes still does more than enough to get a recommendation from me because it takes you on a very fun and charming adventure and if you’re a fan of these types of game’s then you’ll easily be able to look past the shortcomings when it comes to the grand scheme of things.

First, the art style is amazing but the animations have a certain "made with flash" vibe that I personally find extremely offputting. The controls are good, but coming from Hollow Knight they're not as thight and responsive and they kinda feel heavy and sluggish. Sometimes you feel like you don't have full control on what your character is doing. The platforming is decent and the characters have lots of personality and their different moves are cool, but fighting sometimes feels kind of random due to the controls.The whole experience is a bit underwhelming and overall it's... just not that fun, I'm not even sure why, maybe it's due to the level design, but it's a shame.
